Garden Colour and more tiny Beanies (hats)

Welcome to mixture of colour from the top down - head to feet.

Amidst the jungle in one nearly untouched part of my garden i discovered an Echinacea in full bloom for the first time, it's like a purple sunflower. i bought the seedling in Spring from those same markets i showed yesterday, planted it then forgot about it. i'm hoping it will shed seeds and i'll have many more next year. such a delight!

And now, more premmie baby beanies, and this time in Aboriginal colours.
Red, yellow, black - difficult to put together well and i had to hunt around for a good yellow. The one on the right above is too pale in combination with the red and black but alone it is a mid yellow. Tricks of the eye! and the one on the left is a bit strong but i have fiddled with the colours on the screen so you'll have to trust me that both are a bit better in reality. The smaller one started with 72 sts and the larger with 80, but they are acrylic/nylon so a bit looser than the previous ones with wool.

From the top, champions i think. You can just see a tiny black baby lying there in its neonatal IC crib wearing one of these - a hero!

And someone recently asked me how i knit these tiny beanies - the answer is in the round (don't like stitching up seams) and with 2 circular needles. i put about half the stitches on each needle and knit only with one needle at a time, both ends of one needle. just be careful to pull the yarn tightly when taking it from the first needle to the second that's all.

The local hospital here in Bathurst has a need for quite a few of these premmie beanies and basically there's only me making them at the moment. If you have a mind to help a little i would love a few more, any colour. Or alternatively some baby yarn would be most appreciated too. Email me and i'll send you more details incl my address. I would donate them in your name. cheers

Local vegie garden colour, i love the mixture of colours you can get with the slightly more unusual vegie plantings.

And lastly my new Birkenstock sandals, they are oiled leather uppers. they'll last for years and years. If you're in Aus and you want to see a good range of birkis at reasonable prices email me, the B store is having a sale.

Have a good week everyone, it's starting out like Winter here today, windy and raining. byee...

  2. I love the echinacea. I planted one last year which flowered well but I'm gutted that it didn't reappear this year. It's a great flower so I'll have to plant it again.
    Have a good week :)

  4. Aw, sweet little beanies for a sweet little cause ;)

And BIRKENSTOCKS!! OMG, they are my favourite home summer footwear ... I *need* some leopard print ones, heh heh :P

  5. Ahh the Coneflower!!! Beautiful and they grow really well here. I even had an orange one once, but it didn't survive all that well.

Perhaps they need a cooler winter than yours. They like to be on the dry side, so don't overwater.

The birds like the seeds too, so don't expect to see many in the spring (but perhaps yours won't like them). Unless you cover them in your little baggies, of course.

The beanies look bright and cheery! My favourite is the really fluffy one as well. Especially with the added touch of a pom pom on top.

  10. FIRST your perfect feet and the blue veins for hard hoeing visible on the outer left one...touching, and more than deserving of a nice birkinstock shod! Beautiful vegetables, astounding Echinacea (the root medicinal) with it's enviable bloom the bees and butterflies adore. Hard to believe your weather.
Hugs for the beanies and the babies they will warm.

  11. Your vegetables are always so exotic to me! I know the Echinacea as a homaeopatic medicine against flu, it doesn't grow here.
    The bright beanies are cute.

  12. Cool birkies, Kaite! Another gardener's question for you: what variety are those broad green beans in your melange-with-eggplant? Because they look EXACTLY like the Romanos we chatted about earlier...

  13. Christi those are scarlet runners, not Romanos.

Ulla most of what i grow would be exotic to most people in Aus, not found in the supermarkets here but i'm surprised you don't recognise them as you are a gardener too

    Michelle thanx for the hugs.

    Cat hi, how are you?

  14. Thanks for the beautiful colours! Love the beanies, so nice and warm looking! I got my first capsicums - nothing as nice as your basket though! and may your shoes share many good hours with you! Cold and rain here too - but a welcome change - don't have to water the garden....
wish you a good week! hugs, Vera

  16. What wonderful colours Kaite; both the veggies and the beanies! It is icy cold here; I am working in thick socks and fingerless gloves, and can only dream of bare feet and Birkenstocks :-)

Not just thick socks and fingerless gloves, ha ha!!
