Update on the Stairway to Nowhere

It's finished! well almost unless i decide to narrow it and widen that garden bed on the left, always a possibility. In my last post i showed Days 1 - 4, starting on Boxing Day. Well today was Day 5, NYDay, with a day off yesterday for good behaviour. I knew i had a bit to finish off but that 'bit' turned into a whole day
as the final slope needed grading. At each row of bricks you can see above, the level drops off a brick height. We have very heavy gully raker storms here and if i hadn't levelled it this lower section would have washed into the paddock behind the fence. The infill is crushed granite which sets quite hard once it's been watered and stomped on several times, but needs time before it is completely stable. We may have storms in a few days so i was hurrying to finish it. The pavers you can see are also for added stability, i may yet also add a few more. Tweaking the edges!

I love playing with rocks and stones, here i've made a little stone edging just for fun, for a laugh. Several years ago i did a dry stone wall course and made a few dry stone walls on a property we owned back then. I've also done rock carving, or should that be chiselling, i'm just an old rocker. Oh and i do have a seat under the gum tree at the top of the path, with a large flat topped rock for a coffee table.

Anne Marie, the paddock where the cattle were is right behind that gate you can see at the end of the path. They came back again this morning, and had to be chased off several times as i wanted to work with the gate open for an extra breeze. They were so close i could have tickled the bull, tho i would have rather smacked him!

Thankyou everyone for all your encouraging comments on yesterday's post, it helped to motivate me to finish it today. HNY2012 all you lovely blogger friends, i don't know what i'd do without you. May you all have a happy, healthy and safe 2012.

Kaite, we have a door to nowhere in our yard. We did it last spring on a whim. Check it out here:

Rocks are good, but I'd still like to see some nice potted plants. Large urns, with flowers spilling over the sided.

Thanks for the view of the gate. When the cows are somewhere else, perhaps you could take a picture of the open gate so that we can see the wild space beyond.

What a mammoth effort. It must be nice to have cows at your back fence, though I suppose horses would be lovely too. All the best to you both for a happy and healthy year :)

good job Kaite, an amazing effort...I have some rock moving/building up to do in my yard, so you've spurred me on to do it before the weather turns too hot.

HNY2012 to you too.

oh I do LOVE the door to nowhere idea - I can imagine lil Miss 3.5yrs and her fairies
What a wonderful job you've done Kaite

Cat, now that you mention it, i did notice a fluttering wing down there.

Nanette get stuck in, today!

Sarah the mob we used to have were lovely, hand reared and used to people, i could hand feed them. This mob is wild and very curious, and much larger, not lovely to have fresh cow pats everywhere.

AM, anything else you'd like while i'm at it dear?

deanna yes i've been putting it off for months (years?).

Sus i had a peek at your door, great fun. More people should do fun things like that in their gardens.

Oh my goodness so much laboring. The result is wonderful. Be careful in the heat.
I like the colorful orb in your header.

Ah, but those cow nuggets make great garden fertilizer (once they're aged a bit). Your stairway now needs a little garden bench at the left by the fence - somewhere to rest after the walk.

MA, that's a great idea, i'll look for one today. Sometimes we are too close to our projects to see what else they need.

Terry i've been mostly in the shade down there.

Vera those little rocks have been added to, no rock within reach is safe while i continue playing there.

And AM i have done as you wished dear, added pot plants and moved the big rock. Now you'll have to visit!
